Galway & Limerick

This past weekend brought us a 3-day weekend because Halloween provides a bank holiday in Ireland. With our typical forethought, we made no plans and instead hopped in the car Saturday morning and headed to Galway, tourist Mecca of Ireland. It’s only 150 miles from Tramore to Galway, but given the Irish roads that’s nearly a 4-hour drive, though a very lovely one. We got to Galway and spent most of the day sightseeing before dropping in to a Failte Ireland office to check on accommodations. The National Tourism Development Authority provides great service helping travelers to find and book hotels, tours, all the tourist essentials. We knew we were taking a big chance with the holiday, so we weren’t surprised to learn that there were no rooms to be had in Galway. Instead we got a bed-and-breakfast accommodation in Limerick, not quite half the distance back to Tramore. We had a great evening in Limerick, with a nice dinner out at the Unicorn Pub, followed by a movie.

Sunday we started the day wandering around a deserted church and graveyard just down the road from our B&B - see the pics below. Then we spent the rest of the day wandering in the Limerick area, including the little town of Killaloe on the River Shannon, before heading home to Tramore. We decided Galway and Limerick would both be worth a trip back, perhaps sometime when we have company visiting.
